Boeing opens new 777X wing factory

One of the biggest buildings in the world opened in Everett Friday, the new Boeing 777X Composite Wing Center.

Boeing will produce the largest carbon fiber airplane wings in history in the billion-dollar facility.

A few years back, the state Legislature approved the largest tax break in state history, about $9 billion to ensure the wings would be built in Washington State.

In addition, the machinist union agreed to a big cut in not just pensions, but healthcare benefits.

Officials say the sacrifices are worth it.

"This facility represents the beginning of the next chapter in our story that will revolutionize a new industry," said Sen. Patty Murray

The factory is $1.3 million square feet.

The wings of the 777X are so large, the tips of the wings will have to fold to fit through airport gates.
